KBeauty Instagram Stars: Interview with GlitterballMagazine

Hey GlitterballMagazine, we absolutely love your beauty and fashion blog! Can you tell us a bit about yourself?

Thank you so much! I’m very passionate about beauty, skin care, fashion, health and travel, which I like to express with Glitterball Magazine. I have a First Class Honours (BA Hons) degree in Journalism and I’ve always been interested in writing and sharing my creativity with people. I love Japanese and Korean culture, K-pop, J-pop and Korean dramas and have an unhealthy obsession with shoes (please don’t ask me how many I have, I’ve lost count!).

Your blog is so unique. You write about everything from KBeauty to vintage fashion to Foo Fighters concerts. What inspired you to start your amazing blog?

Thank you! I started Glitterball Magazine during my second year of university because I was tired of reading women’s magazine saying you had to look a certain way. One particular fashion magazine said women needed to be ‘tall, tanned and skinny to wear orange’. How ridiculous! I believe beauty is in the eye of the beholder, why should have to conform to beauty standards?

First, I created a self-published zine, which transformed into a digital magazine I designed until a blog migration in the summer of 2015. My aim is to inspire readers with my love of Korean and Japanese beauty, my fashion style and informative health and travel posts.

We can see that you definitely love your Korean beauty products. How did you discover the KBeauty world?

The first Kbeauty item I used was the Dr. Jart+ Water Fuse Water-Max Sleeping Mask from Boots way before Korean skin care really took off. I discovered sheet masks during a trip to Ljubljana (I’m half-Slovenian and regularly visit Slovenia) from brands including My Scheming (actually a brand from Taiwan) and Balea at Drogerie Markt (not a typo!) and Müller.

I did a little digging and found more fantastic Korean skin care products online or at TK Maxx. The rest, as they say, is history… I’m totally hooked on Kbeauty! Lots of my friends are into Kbeauty too, it’s wonderful to share my passion with them.

What was it that got you obsessed with Kbeauty? (e.g. price, quality, packaging)

I like the selection of high quality ingredients for such good value. I’m a sucker for stylish beauty packaging and I love the cute or minimalist designs for Kbeauty. Since I’ve fully immersed myself in Kbeauty, I’ve noticed a big difference in my skin. My redness and rosacea is less of a problem and my skin is much brighter and softer.

We met in person at the Asian Beauty event in London. You had amazing, glowing skin. Do you have any beauty tips for glowing skin?

Thank you! I always wear SPF 50+ and try to use a sheet mask every day. I’m very serious about sun protection so when it’s very sunny, I stay in the shade during the hottest times of the day, wear UPF 50+ gloves from Coolibar and regularly apply sun cream. I always have a UPF umbrella with me, which I can use when it’s sunny or in the rain.

Do you have any other beauty secrets or know any beauty hacks?

In addition to applying sun cream, buying UPF clothing and accessories are a great way to protect your skin from the sun. I swear by UPF 50+ hats from Scala (which I found in TK Maxx). They’re easy to pack in a suitcase or backpack. Jin and V from BTS have been spotted in them! If I’m going to the beach on holiday, I wear UPF 50+ swimwear to shield my skin.

I believe it's important to protect our skin from the inside out and I use The Beauty Chef Collagen Inner Beauty Boost drink and regularly take the White Force tablets from Fancl. I try to eat one serving of the traditional Japanese dish natto a day - not only does it taste delicious but it's packed with lots of vitamins and minerals! I have a lot of food intolerances and try to avoid certain foods like dairy and gluten as much as possible.

I'm really interested in how people start their day. What's your morning skincare routine? What are your go-to products?

I’m sorry in advance for how long my answer is going to be! My morning skin care routine is quite long as I layer several products under my make-up. I usually don’t have time to use an oil cleanser and cleansing foam in the morning (I save that for the evening) so I use a micellar water like the Dr Jart Dermaclear Micro Water.

Although I apply different products depending on what my skin’s like, I always use several toners, essences, an eye cream, a serum and cream for my rosacea, a moisturiser, sun cream and make up primer.

My go-to products include:

  • Krasna Eliksir Facial Toner (this is a Slovenian product)

  • Dear Klair’s Supple Preparation Facial Toner

  • Skin 79 Neroli Skin Clearing Toner

  • Image Skincare Vital C Hydrating Antioxidant A C E Serum

  • SK-II Facial Treatment Essence

  • Avene Antirougeurs Fort Relief Concentrate for Chronic Redness

  • Dermalex Rosacea Treatment Cream

  • Neogen Code9 White Sparkling Cream

  • Mizon - Water Volume EX Cream

  • Neogen Day-Light Sun Protection Sunscreen SPF 50/PA +++

What's your makeup routine like? What are your go-to products?

I think my make-up routine is quite minimal! I don’t really wear much make-up other than foundation, concealer, mascara, something for my brows and a lip tint. I love a ‘no make-up’ look. I love using the Laneige Eyebrow Cushion-cara Two Tone - it’s a cushion for the eyebrows and has serious staying power, even in hot weather. I’ve told friends about it and they’re equally obsessed!

I’m often asked if I’m wearing foundation because the coverage looks so natural. I use the bareMinerals Pure Brightening Serum Foundation in Bare Porcelain followed by the bareMinerals bareSkin Complete Coverage Serum Concealer in Fair and the Perfect Stick in Velvet Rose by Art Deco to cover any imperfections. I layer Labiotte’s Wine Lip Tint in Merlot Burgundy underneath the Laneige Two Lip Bar in Cherry Milk.I set my make up with the NYX Dewy Setting Spray, which is a steal at £7!

You run a really exciting blog, GlitterballMagazine. What does a typical day look like for you?

I try to spend as much time as I can working on blog content and posting on social media. At weekends, I like to get up early, take product photographs, write content or plan out my blog schedule. It’s also the perfect opportunity for me to try out new Kbeauty products I’ve bought!

After a long, tiring day. How do you unwind?

I like double cleansing my skin with an oil (I love the DHC Deep Cleansing Oil and I’m currently using the Real Cica Micellar Cleansing Oil from Neogen) before using a cleansing foam. Afterwards, I’ll apply a few toners and put a sheet mask on and catch up on Korean dramas. I’m currently watching ‘Are You Human Too’ with Seo Kang Joon. Alternatively, I’ll wear a sheet mask while listening to traditional Korean or Japanese music.

What's your night time skincare routine? What are your go-to products?

After double cleansing my skin, I apply four different toners and wear a sheet mask and an eye mask. Next, I’ll pat any remaining essence from the masks, apply one or two more essences (if needed), a moisturiser, eye cream and a sleeping mask. If I remember, I’ll add hand cream into my evening routine. I also apply a lip sleeping mask.

Every other day I use an AHA to help keep my skin clear. I’m a big fan of the Alpha H Liquid Gold (one of the few non-Kbeauty items I use) and I’ve just started using a few samples of the Dr Oracle A-Thera Peeling Stick I got from Keautylab at the Asian Beauty event in London. Once or twice a week I’ll apply a clay mask.

I use different products depending on what my skin needs and what I’m testing but my go-to products include:

  • Dear Klair’s Supple Preparation Facial Toner

  • Alpha H Liquid Gold

  • COSRX Advanced Snail 96 Mucin Power Essence (I’ve been using samples but I’m desperate for the full size version!)

  • Benton Snail Bee High Content Skin Essence

  • EyeNLip Salmon Oil Nutrition Cream

  • Laneige Water Sleeping Mask

  • Kao MegRhythm Steam Eye Mask in Rose

If you were to recommend 5 Kbeauty products for a friend who's never tried KBeauty before, what 5 products would they be?

  • Neogen Day-Light Sun Protection Sunscreen SPF 50/PA +++

  • Dr Jart Brightening Sheet Masks

  • Dear Klair’s Supple Preparation Facial Toner

  • COSRX Acne Pimple Master Patch

  • Benton Snail Bee High Content Skin Essence

I love how creative you are with fashion. How would you describe your fashion style to someone who's never met you?

That’s so sweet, thank you! I’d describe my style as a combination of Harajuku, Blair Waldorf, Mary-Kate Olsen and Noel Fielding. I love eccentric fashion and adore Andre Judd Chang.

Where do you buy clothes? What are your fav high street clothes shops?

I like to combine designer with the high street. My favourite high street stores are Cos, Zara and Uniqlo. I like supporting independent designers like Lazy Oaf, Cyberdog, Startas, YRU and Tokyo Bopper.

What's your future plans for GlitterballMagazine?

I’d like to establish myself more in the Asian skin care community. My aim is to focus more on Korean and Japanese skin care and redevelop sections of my blog to reflect this.  It would be fantastic to work with more skin care brands, too!
