Hey Amy! It's so great to have you in my interview series about Kbeauty bloggers on Instagram! Can you tell us a bit more about yourself?
Hello! My name is Amy, I am 25 years young and I'm a huge foodie. I was born and raised in Markham, ON, Canada! I have a background in art and spent 4 years of my life studying it but I realized in the end, it was more of a hobby rather than a career. Currently, I am a medical office administrator and I love my job! I've been doing this for almost 3 years and I'm very thankful to be in the position where I am today. In my spare time, I like to work on my Instagram feed/blog, game or cook. I'm not much of a cooker but I'm trying! As for games, I really enjoy MMORPGs, survival and etc. I use to be a HUGE league of legends fan but the community has changed throughout the years and I haven't really gone back playing for a while.
You're based in Toronto which makes you the first Canadian KBeauty I've interviewed in this series. How did you first discover the world of KBeauty?
Oh my gosh! That's insane, haha! I first discovered K-Beauty when I was 16. I was a huge K-POP fan (Super Junior, DBSK, GG and etc) and I really looked up to these idols for having the clearest and porcelain looking skin. During that time, I didn't work so I had to save my allowance and bought some makeup for myself. The first K-Beauty product I bought myself was the Missha M BB Cream (red bottle) and that BB cream was pure magic, it made my skin looked so smooth and bright! I felt like I was a K-POP idol that moment.
What was it that got you obsessed with Kbeauty?
I think it would have to be the original Banila Co Primer/Missha Boomer Primer. They were the first primers that I have ever tried in my life and they made my skin look so exaggeratedly "perfect" and smooth. The price points at the time were kind of on the pricier side for me because I was only 16, jobless and so I couldn't really afford to repurchase them. Banila Co Primer goes for about $30 CDN and the Missha Boomer Primer was about $20-$25.
I read on your blog that you use a wide range of beauty products from drug store, asian beauty to high end. Do you notice a difference between Korean and Western beauty products?
Yes! I find western products quite different from K-Beauty through many factors. Eyeshadows, for example, western have really buttery, dense and pigmented shadow formulas but K-Beauty shadows are quite the opposite, more on the powdery side that can be layered if needed and less pigmented. As for cleansers, I noticed there is a big range of K-Beauty brands that offer lower pH cleansers (, heimish, , etc) while western brands are a bit higher in the pH scale. K-Beauty offers BB Creams and foundations with a high SPF along with PA+++(+), while western brands may vary what has SPF and what doesn't have SPF.
What's your everyday morning skincare routine?
My morning routine is so basic compared to my night routine. I'm always in a rush every morning because I'm someone who really values my sleep and I will milk every last bit to sleep in. My morning skincare routine consists of 3 things. I know, this will shock many people but it is what it is. The products I am currently using are the Cosrx Good Morning Low pH Cleanser, Mamonde Rose Toner and a thin layer of the Cerave Moisturizing Cream. It's ridiculously cold in Canada right now and I need all the moisture I can get!
What's your everyday makeup routine like?
I think I'm to the point where I have done a fantastic job optimizing my time applying makeup and the amount of makeup I choose to wear every day. I came from wanting a full face, beat and "doll-like" skin to wanting just a natural, radiant look. My current go-to products are my skin79 hot pink bb cream, the tip concealer, ABH Dip brow pomade, MacQueen NY Liquid Eyeliner, Glossier Cloud Paint in Puff/Storm and to finish, my highlighter of choice * I have a ridiculous amount of highlighters and am proud of it*.
What's your night-time skincare routine?
My evening skincare routine is excessive but nice since the extra steps are a treat and a nice bonus. The products I have been using for my evening skincare routine are the Kose Softymo Speedy Cleansing Oil (pink), Cosrx Salicylic Acid Cleanser, B5 Toner, Klairs Unscented Supple Preparation Toner, iUNIK Rose Galactomyces toner, Innisfree Ecoscience Serum, Klairs Vitamin Drop Serum, A. By Bom Time Return Eye Cream, Cerave Moisturizing Cream and to finish, I use the Herbivore Botanicals Lapis Oil to seal in my skincare!
How has KBeauty changed your life?
K-Beauty has done an amazing job of brightening my skin. I found K-Beauty encouraging, I never really had that many issues with breakouts because I don't break out easily unless I eat extremely poorly for that week or I used a product that has irritated my skin or it's hormonal. I find K-Beauty does a fantastic job encouraging their customers to not only care for their skin but protect their skin from aging and damage.
If you were to recommend 5 Kbeauty products for a friend who's never tried KBeauty before, what 5 products would they be?
Wow, 5?! Ok I'll start with makeup... I would recommend the VDL Lumi layer primer because it's amazing as a primer or even mixed with foundation. I do about :1 ratio of it and it makes my skin look so luminous. The second item I would recommend is lip products in general, I absolutely adore this brand for its cute packaging and their lip products are so long-lasting.
Moving onto skincare, I would highly recommend trying the Heimish Green Foam Cleanser/Cosrx Good Morning Low pH Cleanser. As for toners, I'm a toner junkie and it's something I can never really get enough of... Depending on the person's skin type, I personally am a huge fan of the Innisfree toner simply because it does a superb job controlling my oil production. An all-around good toner is the Klairs unscented supple preparation toner, I love it! And the final product I would recommend is the Cosrx Pimple Patches! These are well-known for a reason and do exactly what they are supposed to.
