KBeauty Stars of Instagram: Interview with Giulia (skinchan_skincare)

Hey Giulia! You’re the first Italian KBeauty influencer I’ve interviewed, thank you for taking part and bringing an Italian audience to KBeauty. I love how cute and kawaii your IG account is (@skinchan_skincare) and your honest reviews of so many international brands. Can you tell us a bit more about yourself?

Hi Emilie! First of all, thank you so much for giving me the chance to take part in this interview. I’m Giulia, 25 years old, from Italy. I’ve always being attracted by Asia and that’s why I decided to study and graduate in Japanese Language and Culture at Ca’ Foscari University in Venice. My passion for K-Beauty has started way before though. I remember myself in the 4th grade of highschool, checking products on Ebay and asking my mom “Can you give me your credit card? I wanna buy this!”.

You also run a beauty blog in Italian where you blog about skincare trends like the “skin method” I think that your blog is a great place for Italian KBeauty newbies to get some beauty inspiration. So how did you discover the world of KBeauty?

It may sound strange, but I discovered the K-Beauty world through K-pop. I was watching random YouTube videos in my bed at night, when I found the video from “Run Devil Run” by SNSD – Girls’ Generation. I watched it and I thought “This music is quite addictive”, but the thing I was completely obsessed with was Taeyeon hairstyle. I started searching how to recreate it...and somehow I found pics of Tony Moly and Skinfood products. Their packaging did the rest. I HAD to get those cute products :)

I read on your blog that you studied Oriental Languages and lived in Japan for a year. After this, you decided to follow your passion for skincare and makeup. What was it about this experience in Asia that made you pursue your beauty passion?

Living in Japan made me think a lot about what I really wanted in life. You know, when you leave your home and start living alone in a place that it’s completely different from where you’re used to live, you start thinking differently and deeply. I remember I kept thinking about what I would have done once back to Italy and the only thing I could think about was “I have to do something that I like”.

When I was in Japan I learnt how to appreciate beauty and I understood that beauty for me means “simplicity”. Floating leaves in the water, wild flowers growing near a temple, the snow on Kinkakuji’s roof. Japanese people are very able at recreating this in everything they do. Simplicity can also be found in how people take care of their bodies and their skin. Just a bit of makeup, but on a perfect, white, glowing skin. I think all this helped me in pursuing my passion for beauty and, in particular, skincare. Big shoutout to my best friends who gave me the courage to start my account!

What was it that got you obsessed with Kbeauty?

Maybe now people may think “So why K-Beauty and not J-Beauty?”. First of all, because of the ratio between price and quality. There are so many products that cost less than 20$ which are packed with good, natural ingredients and work amazingly well. Then, of course, because the lovely packaging of K-Beauty products are a feast for the eyes. Can you say no to a cute cat stuffed with moisturizer? Or to a tomato filled with face mask? Or to a mist in a bunny container? I couldn’t and I still can’t.

Do you notice any difference between KBeauty and Western beauty products?

A huge difference. Western products are way more expensive and usually contain lots of nasties (silicones, parabens...). You basically pay a product not because of the ingredients contained, but because of the famous name of the brand who produces it. And in my opinion Western customers have the tendency to think that if a product costs a lot, then it must be better than a cheaper one.

On the other side, K-Beauty offers a great variety of budget-friendly products for every skin need. Of course there are a lot of expensive K-brands too, but I’m sure that there are great and cheaper alternatives too.

What’s your everyday morning skincare routine?

Considering that I’m always late in the morning, my AM skincare routine is really short compared to the PM one. I usually cleanse my face (with a gentle cleanser or, when my skin is particularly dry and sensitive, spray thermal water), apply toner, a soothing or hydrating serum, moisturizer (gel based one in summer to prevent oilyness) and sunscreen (never skip this step!). I know there are some people who use sheet masks in the morning too...personally I don’t know where they find the time to do it, even if recently I’ve started using eye patches while I have my breakfast XD

What’s your everyday makeup routine like?

As I said before, I prefer natural beauty, so I usually don’t use a lot of makeup. My makeup routine consists only in BB cream mixed with a tone up cream to even my skin, concealer on my dark circles, matte beige eyeshadow (sometimes I put a bit of highlighter in the inner corner of my eyes too), mascara and liptint (I love those from Peripera) that I also use as blush on my cheeks.

What’s your night time skincare routine?

When it comes to my nighttime routine, things start getting more complicated XD I often double cleanse my face, so I can remove any residue of makeup, prevent blackheads and gently dissolve those that I already have. 3-4 days a week I also use a wash off mask as second step. After that, I usually apply toner up to 3 times, depending on how thirsty my skin is and then I use a sheet mask. Then it’s time for serum, moisturizer and face oil (especially in winter). Something like 3 hours later, I’m ready to sleep XD Joking, only 1.

If you were to recommend 5 Kbeauty products for a friend who’s never tried KBeauty before, what 5 products would they be?

Absolutely a cleanser, toner, AHA toner, moisturizer and sunscreen. I think these 5 are the basis of K-Beauty.

Is there any Kbeauty product (skincare or makeup) that is currently on your wish list?

Since I spend a lot of time in the IG skincare community, everyday I end up with adding something new in my wishlist. I absolutely wanna buy more shades of the Peripera lip tints, I also wanna try more products from Innisfree (because I loved their Orchid line) and I wanna try something from the brand I’m From, because it sounds really promising.

Any tips for aspiring KBeauty influencers?

Be yourself! Never try to copy anyone or to fake your personality. Do things with costancy and passion and always be honest to your followers.

We want to know more about you

This or that

Skincare or makeup Skincare

Latte or tea Bubble tea, so I can get both!

Netflix or Cinema Netflix

Early bird or night owl Night owl for sure. I like doing things at night. I feel more concentrated.

Summer or Winter None of them. I can’t stand hot weather and in winter I feel I could freeze and die anytime XD Spring is my favorite!

Fill the gaps

Fav Korean dish

Bulgogi Kimbap. Easy to eat, so I can eat more and more without stopping.

Fav Kpop band

I don’t have a specific one. I like listening to songs that I like without caring about who made them...but if I have to pick just one, I’d say BTS, because I’m in love with V and RM deep, low pitched voices.

Fav spot in the world

Difficult question... I had the chance to travel a lot, so it’s hard to choose. I like Norway, because of its nature and amazing views, and Japan, that I consider a sort of second home, but I still have to visit Korea (I’m planning to go in April). Maybe I’ll fall in love with it!

Fav song

I keep changing it. It depends a lot on the moment and on the emotions I’m feeling.  At the moment it’s “Spring Day” from BTS.

Fav movie

A classic: Titanic. Impossible love stories are my favorites...a happy ending sometimes, though...
