KBeauty Stars of Instagram: Interview with Katherine (@skinfullofseoul)

Hey Katherine! It's so great to have you in my interview series about Kbeauty bloggers on Instagram!  You've been a KBeauty blogger for 4 years which is really impressive (@skinfullofseoul). You've also been featured in the press including Grazia and Racked. It would be fantastic to know more about you. Can you tell us a bit more about yourself?

Thank you for your kind words! Well I'm a 27 yo British K-Beauty blogger. I moved to Seoul, Korea, in 2014 and fell in love with the country. I've always had a keen interest in beauty, but the scene in Korea really intrigued me. I began an Instagram account and then a blog sharing K-beauty finds, and ended up staying in Korea until 2018. I’m back in the UK for now but still blogging about Korean skincare.

It's always great to find bloggers who were based in Seoul. Is this where your love for KBeauty began?

Yes, absolutely! K-beauty wasn't the worldwide phenomenon in 2014 that it is now, so I hadn't really heard of it before I moved out there.

What was it that got you obsessed with Kbeauty? (e.g. price, quality, packaging)

Everywhere in Seoul is just plastered with beauty ads, beauty stores are everywhere (literally every street), and the packaging and aesthetics of the stores are incredible. That was what grabbed my attention, but it was the results in my skin after just several weeks of forming a K-beauty routine that got me obsessed. AND it was affordable, which I couldn't really wrap my head around.

I read on your SkinfullofSeoul blog that you're back in the UK. How do you think the skincare culture is different from Seoul and the UK?

I used to be able to answer this question more definitively, but the lines are much more blurred with the global influence of Korean beauty. For example, the emphasis of hydration with toners and essences wasn't visible in England when I was growing up – but it's present now. Skincare generally is a lot more of a trend now but ultimately makeup still has the strong hold in the UK beauty scene and I'd say that's the big difference between the beauty culture of the UK and Seoul. Skin first, makeup second really is a slogan that encompasses the Korean beauty experience.

What's your everyday morning skincare routine?

I'm testing products all the time but my go to morning routine is

  1. Gentle Cleanser
  2. Toner/ Mist
  3. Light Moisturiser
  4. Sunscreen

For morning go-to products I love the Hanyul Pure Morning Gel Cleanser, Klairs Supple Preparation Facial Toner, Iunik Centella Calming Gel Cream, and Purito Centella Green Level Safe Sun.

What's your everyday makeup routine like?

I vary my makeup A LOT, because I love experimenting and trying new looks. Generally my everyday essentials include a good BB cream like Shangpree Crystal BB, a creamy blush such as Snou Beauty Creamy Lip and Cheek, highlighter, Glossier Boy Brow and a good mascara.

What's your night time skincare routine?

My night time routine can be extensive because I use this time to unwind and pamper myself. If I have time, I do the following:

  1. Makeup Remover / Oil Cleanse
  2. Water Based Cleanser
  3. Vitamin C / AHA / BHA
  4. Toner / Essence
  5. Serum
  6. Sheetmask
  7. Moisturiser
  8. Oil / Sleeping Mask

I have so many favourites but those that come to mind include The Ordinary Glycolic Toner, Purito Centella Toner, Cosrx Advanced Snail 96 Mucin Power Essence, Cosrx Honey Ceramide Cream, 107 Core Flex Cream…

If you were to recommend 5 Kbeauty products for a friend who's never tried KBeauty before, what 5 products would they be?

  1. Cosrx Advanced Snail 96 Mucin Power Essence
  2. Klairs Supple Preparation Facial Toner
  3. Dr Jart Ceramidin Toner
  4. 107 Core Flex Cream
  5. Purito Centella Green Level Safe Sun

Do you have any tips for women in the UK to start getting into Korean skincare?

Don't get overwhelmed! A Korean skincare routine does not have to include 10 steps. It's best to decide what your skincare aims are based on your skin type first, then build a simple routine around that. Do lots of reading and get a good understanding of Korean skincare in general because there are so many online resources now - then proceed slowly!

Is there any Kbeauty product (skincare or makeup) that is currently on your wish list?

I'd really like to try the Iunik Black Snail Restore Serum and all Liah Yoo’s brand Krave products!
